• 1863 – Abraham Lincoln issues his “eye-for-an-eye” order. The order was to shoot a rebel prisoner for every Black prisoner that was shot.

• 1864 – In the Battle of the Crater, Union General Ambrose Burnside fails in his attack on Petersburg, Virginia.

• 1945 – The USS Indianapolis is torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine after delivering the atomic bomb across the Pacific. 880 of the crew were killed and many were attacked by sharks.
